Panthers Drop Two Versus Brescia

OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Kentucky Wesleyan softball team dropped two games versus crosstown rival Brescia Saturday at Jack C. Fisher Park.

The Panthers came out hot in game one. In the top of the first, Bailey Markus singled, Chloe Apple worked a walk, and Kennedy Matheis came through with a double to plate Markus. Paige Crain followed with a single to score Apple before Hannah Beasley came up and hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Matheis as Wesleyan built a 3-0 lead.

The Bearcats immediately got two back in the bottom of the first and later tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the third. The two teams went scoreless for the next three innings and headed into the seventh still tied.

After Wesleyan went away quietly in the top half of the seventh, Brescia took advantage of their turn at the plate and used three singles to score the walk-off run.

The second game was similar to the first. The Panthers got off to another strong start with three runs over the first three innings. In the top of the second, Matheis knocked another double before Crain followed with a single to score the catcher.

In KWC's next turn at the plate, Markus led off with a single and Abby Cunningham doubled to put two in scoring position with no outs. Both advanced a base on a wild pitch as Markus scored, and Matheis later came up again and singled to drive in Cunningham.

Just like game one, the rest of the game was all Bearcats. Brescia scored two in the third, three in the fourth, one in the fifth, and one in the sixth on their way to a 7-3 triumph.

Wesleyan is next set to travel to Canton, Ohio, to take on Malone as G-MAC play begins. The doubleheader on Saturday, March 21st, will begin at 11:00 AM on FloCollege.
