Charleston, W.Va. – The Kentucky Wesleyan volleyball team lost two hard-fought battles as part of the first day at the UC-WVSU Crossover on Friday.
Wesleyan (0-5) took on host Charleston to begin the event. After the Golden Eagles prevailed in a close first set, the Panthers were looking for a response. Down 21-20 in the second set, Wesleyan scored the next five points to tie the match at one set each, highlighted by a strong service run from Ana De Sevilla-Acosta and back-to-back kills by Kami Parlin.
Ultimately, Charleston earned victory in the next two sets to win the match 3-1.
Havanah John led the Panthers with nine kills, and both Hadley Wolfe and Parlin were right behind her with eight each. Sevilla-Acosta and Juliana Greaney performed strongly as setters, with the former tallying 18 assists and the latter adding 17.
Gracie Newton impressed with team-highs in aces (three) and blocks (five) on top of ten digs. Emmy Goering racked up eleven digs to lead the team.
In the second match of the day, Wesleyan took two out of the first three sets against Glenville State to put themselves on the brink of their first win of the season. After prevailing in the fourth set, the Pioneers scored the first two points of the fifth and never looked back.
Wolfe shined with career-highs in kills (22) and blocks (6). She often connected with Greaney, who logged a career-high 34 assists, shattering her previous mark.
Maddie Hanshew set a career-high of her own with 22 digs in the match, and Greaney wasn't far behind with 15 digs to set another career-high.
Wesleyan next plays in their final two games at the UC-WVSU crossover. The Panthers will take on Point Park tomorrow, Saturday, September 13 at 9:00 AM before battling West Virginia State at 6:00 PM. Both matches will be located in Dunbar, West Virginia, on the campus of WVSU and streamed live on MEC TV.
