Kentucky Wesleyan Cheer Named National Champion at Royal Crown Nationals

Owensboro, Ky. – The Kentucky Wesleyan Cheerleading team was named National Champion of their division at the Royal Crown Nationals held from March 15-16 in Louisville, Kentucky.

This is a first for the KWC Cheerleading program, having just begun working towards officially competing starting this season.

In the event, the team had to complete their routine and were scored each day by two panels of judges. Overall, the competition consisted of over 100 teams ranging from All Star teams to Middle, High School, and College level teams in various divisions.

"The team has worked so hard this year and had their ups and downs as every team does every season, so I wanted them to build their competition experience to be ready for bigger opportunities," head coach Amanda Higgs said. "The Royal Nationals was a great opportunity for just that.

"It was a large event with a large number of spectators, and the team competed on a raised stage with lighting, which I think was a first-time experience for all of the athletes," Higgs said. "They had a great day one performance with a couple of bobbles, but for their first time out I couldn't have been prouder of them. Their performance on day two was even better and stronger and they scored even better. To see them come off the mat with nothing but smiles was what made it all worth it."

The team received a banner for the school and each athlete was awarded an individual medal and National Champion ring.

"It was a great way to end our season and give these athletes great memories," Higgs said. "It was also a great way to start building a competition team here at KWC. I am blessed to be able to coach them and can't wait to see what the future holds for KWC Cheer!"
