Wesleyan Splits Two Close Battles to Cap Off Home-Opening Series

Owensboro, Ky. – The Kentucky Wesleyan softball team split their doubleheader vs. Davenport once again on Sunday afternoon.

The two teams also split Saturday's doubleheader to begin an entertaining series between the programs.

In Game 1 of the afternoon, Davenport scored an early run in the first frame to open an otherwise low-scoring affair.

Wesleyan starter Augusta Garr worked out of several jams throughout the game, including allowing no runs with the bases loaded and one out in the second and doing the same in the third with the bases loaded again.

Davenport added a run in the top of the fourth before Wesleyan delivered their response in the bottom half. With one out, Lexie Onyett singled, Chloe Apple worked a walk, and the pair advanced to second and third on a wild pitch before Guinny Garr hit a two-RBI double to tie the game at 2-2.

Both teams threatened multiple times in the ensuing innings but failed to get a run across the plate. In the top of the seventh, with Immi Mann having replaced Garr, Davenport was able to use several soft singles to score what would be the game-winning run.

Wesleyan had an opportunity to tie or win the game in the bottom of the seventh after Lauren Pellerito singled, Riley Hall was hit by a pitch, and Augusta Garr also singled to load the bases with one out, but the home team couldn't get the crucial hit they needed as Davenport prevailed 3-2.

Game 2 was another low-scoring contest with a couple big swings mixed in. Wesleyan scored the first run after Grace Colvin's single drove in Augusta Garr in the bottom of the second.

Later, in the top of the fourth, Davenport's Darby Kramp hit one over the left field wall for the first home run of the series. Coincidentally, that swing did not stand alone for long. To lead off the bottom half of the fourth, Onyett launched her own solo home run to put Wesleyan back on top 2-1.

Still working against Wesleyan starter Immi Mann, Davenport scored two runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead right back, but Mann was able to keep the road team contained to give her offense a chance.

In the bottom of the sixth, Onyett led off with a double and Guinny Garr notched a single to score the former and tie the game at 3-3. Later, with reverse fashion of the first game, Colvin tallied a single to score what would be the game-winning run as Immi Mann (W, 7.0 IP, 3 ER, 5 SO) shut the door on Davenport in their final turn at the plate.

Wesleyan is back at Foster Field this weekend for a Saturday doubleheader vs. Cedarville to begin G-MAC play. First pitch is set for 12:00 PM.
