Wesleyan Comes Up Short vs. Ashland

Grace Colvin throws a gem in Game 2

Owensboro, Ky. – The Kentucky Wesleyan softball team came up short against the Ashland Eagles on Friday afternoon at Foster Field.

Panthers starter Immi Mann had a strong first two innings in Game 1, but the Ashland offense got going in the third, tacking on five runs in their turn at the plate. In the bottom half, the Panthers were able to tally their only run of the game after Cam Mann worked a walk and Guinny Garr later drove her home with a single.

The Eagles added one run in the fifth and four in the seventh, downing Wesleyan by the score of 10-1 in Game 1.

Game 2 was a pitcher's duel, with Panthers starter Grace Colvin posting a stellar outing (9.0 IP, 2 ER, 3 SO).

Wesleyan got on the board first in the second game. Lauren Pellerito tallied a single, Augusta Garr followed with a single of her own, and Cam Mann came through next with another single to score Pellerito and put the Panthers on top 1-0.

Ashland immediately responded, using a double, a sacrifice bunt, and a sacrifice fly to small ball their way to tying the game at 1-1.

From there, neither team could put together multiple hits to scratch across another run. Both pitchers continued excellent play into extra innings, and the Eagles finally recorded their second run of the game in the top of the ninth to take a 2-1 advantage.

In Wesleyan's final turn on offense, Guinny Garr earned a single to put the winning run at the plate but the Panthers couldn't get her home in the 2-1 defeat.

Wesleyan is back in action in the coming days at Foster Field, set to next battle Ohio Dominican. With impending weather in the Owensboro area, the game (originally scheduled for Sunday) is likely to be postponed to a weekday next week.
