Canton, Ohio – The Kentucky Wesleyan softball team suffered two losses at Malone on Saturday, a 13-2 defeat in Game 1 and a 13-9 defeat in Game 2.
In the first game of the day, Malone started fast with 12 runs in the first three innings. The Panthers (4-19, 0-4 G-MAC) scratched across two runs in the top of the fifth after AJ Middleton doubled to drive in Hannah Beasley and Grace Colvin, but the run rule went into effect after Wesleyan failed to get the deficit under 10 runs.
In Game 2, the Pioneers (14-4, 2-2 G-MAC) built a large early lead once again after scoring nine runs in the first two innings.
This time, the Panthers fought back. Wesleyan tallied a run in the top of the second on a Guinny Garr RBI double that drove in Colvin after the former also doubled. Later, in the top of the third, the Panthers used consecutive doubles by Cam Mann and Lexie Onyett to score another run and inch closer at 9-2.
The Pioneers recorded three additional runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up 12-2, but the Panthers immediately responded with one of their best offensive innings of the year in the top of the fifth.
To lead off, Immi Mann hit a solo home run over the left field fence for her first of the season. Augusta Garr followed with a single, Cam Mann singled as well, and Chloe Apple worked a walk to load the bases, and Colvin came through with another single to score Garr and move everyone up a base. Beasley then knocked a single of her own to move everyone up a base again and score another Wesleyan, making the score 12-5.
Guinny Garr next grounded out but drove in Apple on the ball in play, Middleton followed with yet another single to score Colvin, and Augusta Garr came right behind her with her second single of the frame to score two more and put Wesleyan within three at 12-9.
Malone added a run in the bottom half of the fifth to increase their advantage to 13-9 and that ended up being the final score of the game.
The Panthers next travel to North Canton, Ohio, for a doubleheader at Walsh tomorrow, Sunday, March 23, set to begin at 12:00 PM.
