Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Isaiah Tomes, Athletic Communications

What A Difference A Week Makes

OWENSBORO, KY – Seven days after losing 77-44 in Hillsdale, Wesleyan women's basketball (12-8, GMAC 8-7) got their revenge as they upset the Chargers (15-7, GMAC 12-3) 71-68 on Saturday afternoon at the Sportscenter. Sydnee Richetto scored 22 points, marking her third game of the season with 20+ points.

"I just think we came in with a different mentality," Richetto said. "We had nothing to lose after [last Saturday]. We came out here with an underdog mentality and gave it all we had. It was every second, every play, and we leaned on each other."

The senior guard got going early, drilling two three-pointers in the first three minutes of the game. Carson Sisk made triple off the pick-and-pop pass from Vilborg Jonsdottir. Richetto scored four straight late in the first to give her ten points in the quarter and Wesleyan a 24-20 lead.

The Panthers went on a 7-1 run in the second quarter led by two buckets from Sisk. Shiya Hoosier's turnaround jumper at the 1:38 mark gave Wesleyan a 41-38 lead at halftime.

It was the Shiya Hoosier Show at the beginning of the third quarter. She came out of the locker room and sank THREE three-pointers in less than two minutes. The fifth-year senior has been battling back from a PCL sprain that she suffered on December 14th.

"Sitting out for almost six weeks, it was really cool to watch my teammates grow on the court and get to be supportive of them," Hoosier said. "Being back has been awesome because all my teammates are so supportive and are always pushing me to be the best I can be. They've helped me get over the mental gap of playing again. Today was a big win for us and I felt like the injury wasn't holding me back anymore."

Wesleyan went on a 6-0 run later in the quarter to give the Panthers a comfortable ten-point lead late in the third.

Hillsdale began the final quarter with an 8-0 run to cut the Wesleyan lead to one. The Chargers scored to take the lead with 3:46 remaining, but Hoosier responded with a pull-up jumper to regain the advantage. Myah Montgomery drilled a three on the next possession off of Jonsdottir's sixth assist of the day. With just over a minute left, Montgomery grabbed a massive board off the offensive glass and put it back to extend the Panther lead to four. With 16 seconds left, she capped the game off with a make at the charity stripe.

Hoosier finished with 17 points on 70% shooting (7-10 FG). Montgomery added 11 points and seven rebounds. Dabu recorded nine points and five rebounds. Jonsdottir chipped in six assists.

In a season full of injuries and new faces, Wesleyan still sits in the top half of the G-MAC standings at sixth place. After two home wins, the Panthers are in great position as we're less than four weeks out from G-MAC conference tournament.

"I think if we continue to play the way we played today, connected and showing how much we love and care for each other, then it will show in long run," Hoosier said.

Wesleyan will go on a road trip next weekend to take on two top teams in the G-MAC in Northwood (#5) and Findlay (#4). After an impressive home stand, the Panthers have two great chances to move up in the conference standings.
