Wesleyan Falls in First of Four Against Purdue Northwest

Owensboro, Ky. – The Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers fell 6-3 to Purdue Northwest in their home opener Friday afternoon.

Wesleyan moved to 3-5 with the loss, and after having their first several games cancelled due to weather, the Pride moved to 1-0 in their season debut.

Panthers righty David Castleberry (L, 4.0 IP, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO) got the start on the mound for the Panthers, and after he forced back-to-back popups to begin his outing, a hit-by-pitch and a double put the Pride's first run up on the board in the top of the first.

Wesleyan immediately responded in the bottom half against Purdue Northwest starter Conor Pangburn. Batting second in the inning, designated hitter Rhett Dysholm launched one over the right field wall to tie the game at 1-1.

The Pride had another two-out rally in the second frame, as a double, a walk, and a two-RBI triple put two more runs up for the road team.

After a few quiet frames on both sides, the scoring returned in the top of the fifth. Castleberry completed a solid day for Wesleyan and was relieved by Jacob Dilday to begin the top of the inning, and Purdue Northwest did not plan to let him settle in as the first batter of the frame hit a home run to increase the Pride's advantage to 4-1.

Wesleyan wasn't going to go down without a fight. Still working against Pangburn (W, 5.0 IP, 3 ER, 4 BB, 3 SO), Ben Brombaugh worked a walk, Logan Molnar was hit by a pitch, and Dysholm delivered a single up the middle to drive Brombaugh in. Jase Mizell followed with a two-out double to score Molnar, pulling the Panthers within one at 4-3.

The Pride added a run in both the sixth and seventh innings, and that was all relief pitcher Owen Walkowiak would need. The Pride's stout righty pitched the final four innings, working around four walks while not allowing a hit and striking out six.

The two teams are set to play three more this weekend, with a doubleheader coming tomorrow, Saturday, March 1 beginning at 12:00 PM.
