Panthers Sweep In-City Rival Brescia

Owensboro, Ky. – The Kentucky Wesleyan softball team swept in-city rival Brescia on Thursday afternoon at Fisher Park.

Wesleyan improved to 2-7 this season, while Brescia fell to 1-3.

The Panthers were hot at the plate all afternoon, starting by scoring two runs on passed balls in the first inning of Game 1 and never looking back.

After Brescia got on the board in the bottom half of the first to make the score 2-1, Wesleyan went to work. Lexie Onyett reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded to score Grace Colvin, Chloe Apple followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in Augusta Garr, and Cam Mann later crossed the plate on another wild pitch to tack on the Panthers' third run of the frame and push their advantage to 5-1.

Later, in the fourth, Guinny Garr singled to left field to score Onyett and Kennedy Matheis next singled up the middle to drive in both Guinny Garr and Apple, putting Wesleyan in complete control at 8-1.

Starter Immi Mann (W, 5.0 IP, 3 ER, 2 SO) had a strong day, keeping the Bearcats offense at bay while her offense showed out. Brescia added two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Panthers immediately responded in the top of the fifth as Gabi Logsdon scored on an error, Onyett doubled to center to score both Mann and Riley Hall, and Guinny Garr delivered the final blow with an RBI single that drove in Onyett and forced the run rule at 12-3.

In Game 2, the Panthers' bats again got hot early as Apple hit a double in the top of the first that drove in Mann and Augusta Garr and put Wesleyan on top 2-0.

The Panthers added another run in the third on a Grace Colvin RBI single and later had their best inning of the season offensively, scoring six runs in the fourth. Onyett got the party started with a single that scored Augusta Garr, Apple followed with another single to get Onyett across the plate, and AJ Middleton came up next and delivered with yet another single that drove in Apple.

Wesleyan wasn't stopping there. Colvin, Hannah Beasley, and Augusta Garr hit three consecutive singles to drive in three more runs, putting the Panthers on top 10-0.

Guinny Garr (W, 3.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 SO) had an excellent outing as the starter. The Bearcats scored their only two runs of the game in the fourth after she was relieved, but the Panthers forced the run rule once again after Matheis hit a single to score Onyett and finalize the 11-2 triumph.

Wesleyan will look to keep their momentum rolling this weekend. The Panthers are set for two road doubleheaders, one on Saturday at McKendree beginning at 12:00 PM and the other on Sunday at Missouri – St. Louis also beginning at 12:00 PM.
