OWENSBORO, KY – Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball (14-9, GMAC 10-8) took down the rival Panthers of Ohio Dominican (12-14, GMAC 7-11) 65-59 on Saturday.
Sydnee Richetto had quite the Senior Day, once again dominating offensively scoring 22 points on 8-13 shooting.
Vilborg Jonsdottir and Richetto scored five points each at the beginning of the contest to extend Wesleyan to an early 12-2 lead. ODU responded with a 7-0 run to get right back in the game.
Myah Montgomery made a layup late as Wesleyan would open the second quarter with a one-point edge.
Richetto scored the Purple Panthers' first six points of the quarter.
Shiya Hoosier made a driving layup at the 5:01 mark to regain the lead 26-25. Richetto converted a tough and-one with 33 seconds remaining as Wesleyan held a 36-32 lead at halftime.
Jonsdottir's bucket at the 7:19 mark kicked off the second half scoring. Wesleyan went on a quick 7-0 run late in the third led by a triple from Montgomery. ODU responded with a floater to cut the KWC lead to five heading into the final period.
Arielle Dabu made a huge triple with just over five minutes left to give Wesleyan a ten-point lead. Ohio Dominican was far from finished as they orchestrated a 10-2 run through the final minutes of the game. Their comeback efforts were extinguished by free throws made by Dabu and Richetto.
Montgomery finished with an impressive 12 points and nine rebounds. Jonsdottir scored nine points along with four assists. Dabu added nine and a huge ten rebounds.
Wesleyan currently sits in sixth in the Great-Midwest Athletic Conference with two games remaining in their regular season schedule. Wesleyan will host Lake Erie in a rescheduled contest from earlier in the season on Monday, February 24
th at 12 p.m. Next Saturday, KWC will travel to in-state foe Thomas More for the final contest of the regular season.
