PAINESVILLE, OH. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College wrestling team picked-up with Great Midwest action on Saturday with a pair of matches against two of the best teams in the league. The Panthers lost to No. 21 Ashland to start the day. Later in the day Wesleyan suffered a 49-3 defeat to Lake Erie College.
The No. 21 Eagles showed why they are one or the best teams in the G-MAC and Nation. Ashland shut-out the Panthers 52-0.
Dalen Kimble at 157 pounds produced a late first period take-down to pull within two points, 7-5, of Fernado Lopez. A third period reversal ended Kimble's chances of a decision as Lopez picked-up the win 13-7.
Against Lake Erie the Panthers faired with more success.
Larson Pilant lost a tough decision at 133-pounds to Jack Harrison 6-3. In the final seconds, Pilant got a hold of Jack Harrison's leg, but was unable to secure control before time expired.
Nolan McKelvy picked a up win at 174-pounds defeating Luke Kaiser 3-2. After two scoreless periods, Kaiser caught McKelvy on his back briefly for two points in the third. McKelvy quickly reversed the position to tie the match 2-2. McKelvey maintained control on top for the remainder of the period to win with a bonus riding time point.
At 197 pounds,
Drayden McKerrow was in firm control against Quinn Gorman. McKerrow took Gorman down to his back in the first period to hold a 7-0 lead after the first three minutes. Unfortunately for McKerrow, Gorman caught a break in the second frame, getting McKerrow onto his back for a pin.
The Panthers will travel to the most competitive event of the season on Saturday. Wesleyan will be in Indianapolis for the 46th running of Midwest Classic. Competition at Nicoson Hall on the campus of the University of Indianapolis is scheduled to begin at 8:30AM CT.
