Panthers Complete 13-Point Comeback in Overtime Thriller

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball team (2-1, 0-0 G-MAC) erased a 13-point deficit to earn a 75-69 overtime road win over Trevecca Nazarene Wednesday afternoon.

The Trojans got off to a quick start on their home floor, taking an 18-9 lead with just over three minutes left in the first quarter. Back to-back threes by Avah Montgomery and Myah Montgomery, as well as a layup by Georgia Acompanado, allowed the Panthers to cut their deficit to three at 20-17 by the end of the frame.

Trevecca (2-1, 0-0 GSC) opened the second period with a 15-5 run to build a 35-22 lead about midway through the quarter. Wesleyan again fought back, closing the half with a 13-2 burst that was headlined by six Carson Sisk points to head into the break down just two at 37-35.

The Panthers took their first lead since the first quarter on an Acompanado three-pointer that put the road team up 45-44 with just over four minutes left in the third frame. Wesleyan managed to increase that advantage to six by the end of the period after Riley Neal hit a layup at the buzzer.

The Trojans began the final quarter on a 6-0 run to tie the game, and from there, it was a back-and-forth battle. Emma Bruwer scored the final seven points of regulation for the Panthers, including a layup to take a one-point lead with just 40 seconds left, but Trevecca's Jordan Gillies had a chance to win the game with two free throws.

Gillies managed to sink both, but the second was waived off due to a lane violation that eventually led to overtime between the former G-MAC foes.

Overtime was nearly all Panthers. Acompanado hit a layup, Myah Montgomery hit another three-pointer, and Bruwer drained another free throw to put Wesleyan up 67-61. Trevecca got their deficit down to three with under a minute left, but Neal answered with a driving layup and Bruwer knocked down two more from the charity stripe to put the game away.

KWC had eight different players score at least five points in the game, led by Bruwer with 16 and Neal with 13. Bruwer also added four assists, as did point guard Vilborg Jonsdittir, and both Neal and Avah Montgomery brought down a team-high five rebounds.

Neal also racked up a career-high four steals, making a huge difference in the possession battle.

Wesleyan next comes right back home for a matchup versus Missouri – St. Louis at 5:30 PM inside Jones Gym at the Woodward Health and Recreation Center on the campus of Kentucky Wesleyan College. Again, this game will NOT be at the Owensboro Sportscenter and instead will be played inside Jones Gym at the Woodward Health and Recreation Center.
