Wesleyan Falls Short to Open New Campaign

Owensboro, Ky. – The Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball team was defeated in a hard-fought battle against Missouri S&T Friday afternoon inside the Owensboro Sportscenter.

Wesleyan built an early 19-14 lead in the first quarter, highlighted by a layup and three-pointer from Iratxe Amorrortu Sainz. The Miners were able to earn the final four points of the frame, heading to the second period down just one at 19-18.

Emma Bruwer hit a three-pointer to begin the next frame, but S&T kept on fighting. The back-and-forth affair continued, resulting in the score being knotted up at 33 heading into the break.

The road team came out firing in the third quarter, scoring 29 points in those ten minutes. Another bucket by Emma Bruwer put Wesleyan within ten at 62-52 to end the period.

Another three by Bruwer and a free throw by Ricky Kapteijn pushed Wesleyan within six to open the fourth. Later, a fastbreak layup by Georgia Acompanado cut the deficit to four, but that was as close as the Panthers would come as clutch free throws by the Miners finalized the 81-71 victory.

Bruwer poured in a career-high 22 points on 9-13 shooting in a team-high 29 minutes. Myah Montgomery joined her in double digits with ten points.

The Panthers are right back to it tomorrow, Saturday, November 15, against the Lincoln Blue Tigers at 3:30 PM inside the Owensboro Sportscenter.
