OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball team earned their first victory of the season with a 69-64 overtime defeat of Lincoln Saturday afternoon inside the Owensboro Sportscenter.
Wesleyan got off to a fast start, building an early 13-6 lead off a Myah Montgomery three-pointer and two Carson Sisk layups. Lincoln scored five of the final six points in the frame to head to the second down just three at 14-11.
The score stayed close throughout the next quarter. Another bucket from Montgomery allowed the Panthers to go into halftime with a slim 26-24 advantage.
In the third frame, neither team led by more than three at any point. Vilborg Jonsdottir had a three-pointer and a layup to pace a low-scoring affair.
The fourth quarter was just as exciting. Lincoln led 52-51 with just over three minutes remaining, but an and-one driving layup and a tip-in by Emma Bruwer put the Panthers up 56-52 with under two minutes to play.
Wesleyan again had a four-point lead with 30 seconds left in the game, but consecutive three-pointers from Lincoln's Laini Joseph, with two Emma Bruwer free throws in between, helped the Blue Tigers force overtime.
Montgomery opened the overtime period with a three-pointer, but Lincoln again responded with back-to-back buckets to take a one-point lead. Later, after Avah Montgomery tied the score with a free throw, Iratxe Amorrortu Sainz nailed a corner three-pointer off an assist from Bruwer to put the Panthers up 67-64 with 29 seconds left.
After a strong defensive stop, Sisk put the game away with two free throws to help put a one in the win column for Wesleyan.
The Panthers had four double digit scorers: Montgomery (13 points), Bruwer (12 points), Jonsdottir (10 points), and Riley Neal (10 points).
Neal also had a team-high eight rebounds, while Georgia Acompanado added a team-high five assists. Bruwer racked up three steals and Jonsdottir added two on the defensive end.
The Panthers will head on the road for the first time this season on Wednesday, Novembr 19, to face off against Trevecca Nazarene at 1:00 PM in Nashville, Tennessee. The game will be streamed live on FloCollege.
