Panthers Reign Supreme

OWENSBORO, KY. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College took down the University of Findlay on Thursday evening at Panther Field. Wesleyan blitzed the Oilers from the jump to extract their second win over the Oilers in as many years. However, Findlay defeated the Panthers earlier this season and got the better of Wesleyan in last year's Great Midwest Title match, but on Thursday the Panthers extracted some revenge.

The Panthers (6-2-6, 6-2-2 G-MAC) produced a clean sheet over the Oilers (6-5-2, 5-3-2 G-MAC) to gain a valuable three points in the league standings. The Oilers came into the match tied with the Panthers in the season standings, but the Panthers broke the tie and moved into third place overall after a 2-0 victory.

Less than a minute into the match, Haakon Torvbraaten flighted a long pass from midfield to Cal Nolan on the opposite side of the Findlay net. Nolan quickly gained control and put-away the eventual game-winner. As Nolan was on the right side, he beat the keeper through the lower left corner of the net. The Panthers took five shots in the opening half, two on goal. Iver Sjavag only had to make one save in the first 45 minutes as the Panthers took a 1-0 lead at intermission.

Like in the first half, the Panthers kept things rolling early in the second period. In the 52nd minute Wesleyan added the insurance goal as Nicklas Henriksen showed a touch of class by tapping a pass behind himself to Torvbraaten who was square in front of the Oilers' net. Torvbraaten punched a shot under into the bottom of the net, giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead.

The Panthers kept the pressure on as they took three more shots the rest of the match. The defense took care of the rest. Sjavag finished the match with one save. Jersey Lopez took two shots on the night, but it was Torvbraaten who was the man of the match with a goal and assist. Wesleyan finished the match 10 shots, four on goal.

On Saturday, Northwood will travel to Owensboro to play the Panthers. The match at Panther Field is scheduled to start at 5PM and will be streamed live on FloCollege.
