North Canton, Ohio – The Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball team earned a hard-fought 73-70 victory over the Walsh Cavaliers on Saturday afternoon inside Alumni Arena.
The Panthers are now 2-0 on the current four-game road trip, improving to 7-5 overall and 3-4 in the G-MAC. Walsh fell to 8-8 overall and 3-5 in the G-MAC as Wesleyan was able to get revenge on last Saturday's loss at the hands of the Cavaliers.
Wesleyan had a strong first quarter, using an 11-5 run to close out the frame and build a 17-11 lead headed into the second. Riley Neal nailed two three-pointers in the period.
The second quarter was all Walsh, as the Cavaliers won the frame 18-8 and took a 29-25 advantage into the break.
The second half held many lead changes as the back-and-forth action continued. Emma Bruwer had seven points in the period, and a last-second three-pointer by Carson Sisk put the Panthers up five at 53-48 going into the final frame.
Wesleyan led for the majority of the fourth, but an 8-0 run about midway through by Walsh tied the game at 64-64 with four minutes to play. Later, a three-pointer by the Cavaliers put the home team up two at 70-68 with just under two minutes left, but the Panthers responded with an Arielle Dabu three-pointer with 24 seconds to go that put them up for good.
Sydnee Richetto earned a steal on the Cavaliers' ensuing possession and knocked down two free throws to seal the 73-70 triumph.
Bruwer once again had an impressive performance, logging a team-leading 16 points on top of four rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Dabu was right behind her with 14 points, two rebounds, and two steals.
The trio of Neal (12 points, eight rebounds, and three assists), Richetto (10 points, five rebounds, and three steals), and Myah Montgomery (10 points and five rebounds) rounded out the double-digit scorers for Wesleyan. Sisk had a stat-sheet stuffing day off the bench with five points, six rebounds, two assists, three steals, and a blocked shot.
Wesleyan has two games left on the current road trip, the first of which against Ohio Dominican. The women are set to tip at 4:30 PM on Thursday, January 16, with the men to follow at 6:30 PM.
