OWENSBORO, KY - The Panthers came close on Sunday, but fell 6-4 and 9-7 to the Walsh Cavaliers. In the second game, Wesleyan mounted a big four-run bottom of the seventh inning comeback to send the game to extras, before Walsh scored two in the top of the eighth to get the win.
Walsh improves to 8-20 (3-5 G-MAC), while Wesleyan drops to 15-21 (6-10 G-MAC).
Game One
The Panthers led early in the opener, as
Megan Matheis his a two-run bomb to left center in the bottom of the first to score
Augusta Garr and make it a 2-1 lead. Garr then scored her sister
Guinny Garr in the second on a sacrifice fly to extend Wesleyan's lead to 3-1.
A big third inning for Walsh saw them take a 4-3 lead, and they held on to win the game 6-4.
Megan Matheis was 3-for-4 with two RBI's, two runs, and one home run in the game.
Guinny Garr was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Chloe Williams (6-6) took the loss for the Panthers.
Game Two
Walsh took an early lead on the home side in game two, going up 4-0 after three.
Megan Matheis took things into her own hands in the fourth, hitting a three-run home run in the fourth to make it a one-run game. Another big inning for Walsh in the sixth gave them a 7-3 lead, and the Panthers looked dead in the water.
In the bottom of the seventh,
Grace Colvin opened the inning with a single, and two batters later, Lauren Pellarito, who pinch ran for Colvin, scored on a double from
Augusta Garr.
Cam Mann then hit a big double to fence to score Garr on the next at bat, making it a two-run game, 7-5. After Matheis was intentionally walked and
Chloe Apple grounded out to advance the runners,
Allie Dunn hit a 2 RBI single to score Matheis and Mann, tying the game at 7-7.
The Cavaliers plated two in the top of the eighth, and despite loading the bases in the bottom of the inning, the Panthers failed to plate a run and fell in extras.
Leading the way at the plate again was
Megan Matheis, who was 2-for-3 with three RBI's, two runs scored, one home run, and was inentionally walked twice.
Augusta Garr did her job at the leadoff spot, going 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.
Allie Dunn (2-6) struck out three in the loss.
The Panthers next contest will be on Thursday, April 11th, when they play host to Kentucky State in non-conference action. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
