Panther battle Eagles to the brink on Senior Day

OWENSBORO, KY - The Kentucky Wesleyan Baseball team held tough with the #8 Ashland Eagles on Sunday, but ultimately fell 4-1 and 2-1 (11 inn.) in two very tight games.

The day was highlighted by one of the best pitching performances in Panther history, as in game two senior Seth Wright, pitching in his final career game at Panther Park, pitched a nine-inning, one hit gem to hold the Eagles scoreless and give Wesleyan a chance in extras. It was the most innings pitched in his career, and his nine strikeouts in the game put him 19 away from tying Brandon Brooks for the most strikeouts all time in KWC history.

Following both games, the Panthers honored seniors Austin Baugh, Brayden Bush, Bryce Zupan, Cade Moore, Kyle Werries, Max Payne, Nick Judd, Nick Wimber, Noah Davis, Seth Wright, TJ Williams, and Tyler Timmermann for their contributions to the program.

Game One

The opening game saw Ashland take an early lead, going up 1-0 after one. Wesleyan answered back in the third, as Bryce Zupan hit into a fielders choice to score Noah Davis. The Eagles took advantage of a Panther error to score three runs in the sixth. Wesleyan put runners in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't plate any runs.

Braxton French and Bryce Zupan each notched two hits in the game.

Senior Brayden Bush was lights out on the mound, as he struck out eight batters in 4.2 innings of action. Bryan Byrd (0-4) allowed just one hit and struck out five in the loss.

Game Two

If you like pitching, game two was the game for you. Kentucky Wesleyan's Seth Wright and Ashland's Cam Scott were lights out, as they went through the entirety of the nine inning game without allowing a run. Wright had a no hitter going through eight innings, before a single to open the ninth broke up the no-no. He quickly rebounded, getting three straight outs to send the game into extra innings.

In the 10th Ashland took advantage of the runner placed on second, using two flyouts to advance the runner home. Wesleyan answered in the bottom of the inning, as a Bryce Zupan sac bunt advanced Braden Vinyard to third, and he was brought home thanks to an RBI single from Gabriel Medina. Wesleyan failed to answer the Eagle's run in the 11th, falling in the two and a half hour game.

Noah Davis, Kyle Werries, and Gabriel Medina all notched a hit in the game.

Seth Wright finished with a stat line of nine innings pitched, one hit, no runs, and nine strikeouts. Josh Tucker (1-3) would take the loss, with neither of his two runs given up being earned.

The Panthers now sit in seventh in the G-MAC standings, and will have a great chance to move up in the standings when they travel to ninth place Hillsdale next week. The doubleheaders will take place on Saturday and Sunday in Hillsdale, Michigan.
