OWENSBORO, KY - Facing the No. 8 ranked Ashland Eagles on Saturday, the Panthers fell 7-5 and 3-0 in two close games.
Ashland improves to 32-6 (18-4 G-MAC), while Wesleyan falls to 14-23 (12-8 G-MAC).
Game One
The Eagles, who have dominated G-MAC teams this year, had their work cut out for them against Wesleyan's
Evan Oakley. Oakley gave the Panthers every chance to win, as he allowed just two runs and struck out five in six innings of work. Unfortunately for the sophomore hurler, the Panthers only managed to plate one run in that time span, as a
Nick Wimber groundout RBI in the first was the home side's only run for the first six innings.
The Eagles tacked on two more in the seventh, but Wesleyan came back to cut it in half after a
Rowan Teran RBI in the bottom half of the inning made it 4-2. Wesleyan took advantage of a few Ashland miscues in the eighth, as
Noah Davis and
Braxton French each scored due to wild pitches, tying the game at four apiece.
Gabriel Medina then hit a sacrifice fly to score
Braden Vinyard, putting Wesleyan up 5-4.
Good teams don't go down easy, as Ashland answered with three runs in the top of the ninth to take a 7-5 lead. The Panthers failed to plate a run in the bottom of the inning and fell by just two in heartbreaking fashion.
Gabriel Medina was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the game.
Austin Baugh (1-2) took the loss.
Game Two
The second game was a pitchers dual, as Ashland's Justin Dyksma and Wesleyan's
Nick Judd battled it out allowed a combined seven hits in the game while striking out nine, with seven of those coming from Judd.
Unfortunately for Judd (2-3), his defense did him no favors, as all three of his runs given up were unearned due to errors. The Panthers, who have been playing well in the field as of late, tied a season high with four errors in the contest.
The Panthers lone hits of the game came off the bats of
Cade Moore and
Braxton French.
Wesleyan will take on the Eagles in their final home games of the season tomorrow, with the first game of the doubleheader starting at noon. Following the games, Wesleyan will honor their seniors with a ceremony on the field.
