OWENSBORO, KY -
Megan Matheis hit two home runs, and
Kristyn Murphy pitched a complete game shutout to lead Wesleyan to 5-3 and 2-0 wins over Oakland City on Wednesday.
With the wins Kentucky Wesleyan improves to 7-11, while Oakland City drops to 7-9.
Game One
The Panthers scored early and often in the opener, scoring all five runs in the first two innings. Two walks to open the game put
Megan Matheis in the perfect position to do what she does best, bringing runners home. She hit an RBI double to score
Chloe Apple, making it 1-0.
Kristyn Murphy and
Guinny Garr each notched RBI's in the next two at bats to make it 3-0 after one.
The second inning saw Wesleyan extend their lead to 5-0 thanks to a two-run shot from
Megan Matheis that scored
Augusta Garr. Oakland City scored three runs in the third to make things interesting, but freshman
Chloe Williams pitched a gem and held the Mighty Oaks scoreless over the final four innings to secure the win.
For the game,
Megan Matheis was 3-for-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored.
Guinny Garr and
Allie Dunn each registered two hits in the contest.
Chloe Williams (2-2) allowed just three runs and struck out four in a complete game victory.
Game Two
Runs were not easy to come by in the second game, with Wesleyan holding on for a slim 2-0 victory.
Megan Matheis accounted for all the Panther's runs, as she hit a solo shot in the first inning, and hit an RBI single to score
Shelbi Patterson in the sixth.
Megan Matheis was 2-for-2 with two RBI's and a run scored in the game, while
Shelbi Patterson and
Grace Colvin each picked up a hit for the Panthers.
Kristyn Murphy (2-4) was on her game, as she struck out seven and allowed just four hits in the complete game shutout. In addidition to those stats, she didn't walk one batter, showing her impressive control.
The Panthers are scheduled to host Bethel University of Tennessee on Saturday in their first game at Foster Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT.
