OWENSBORO, KY - The Kentucky Wesleyan Softball team opened up their home campaign with a bang on Sunday, taking down Bethel University of Tennessee 4-1 and 9-1.
Wesleyan improves to 9-11 with the wins, while Bethel drops to 5-7.
Game One
Down 1-0 early, the Panthers took the lead in the third inning thanks to a 2 RBI double from
Guinny Garr, scoring
Lauren Pellerito and
Augusta Garr. The Panthers methodically added to the lead as the game went along, with
Megan Matheis collecting an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the fourth, and
Shelbi Patterson scoring thanks to an RBI single from
Augusta Garr in the sixth.
Augusta Garr was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while her sister
Guinny Garr went 1-for-3 with two RBI's.
Chloe Williams (3-2) has found her form as of late, notching six strikeouts in this one. She also was able to pitch out of multiple jams, as the freshman stranded nine Wildcats on base in the game.
Game Two
Megan Matheis got things going for Wesleyan in the second game, as her RBI's in the first and third inning put the Panthers up 2-0. Bethel came back with a run in the top of the fifth, but the Panthers blew the game open with a five-run fifth inning.
With two outs and bases loaded,
Brooke Brown scampered home on a throwing error by the pitcher to make it 4-2. With the bases still loaded,
AJ Middleton hit a 3 RBI triple on the next at bat, extending the lead to 6-3 in favor of the home team.
Lauren Pellerito hit an RBI single two batters later to make it 7-1 Panthers after five. In the bottom of the sixth,
AJ Middleton came up to bat with the bases loaded again, and again she delivered. The junior hit a 2 RBI single to make it 9-1 and win the game.
Kristyn Murphy (2-4) pitched a gem of a game, going the distance while striking out six and allowing just one run and four hits.
The Panthers open up G-MAC play next week when they travel to Ashland and Ohio Dominican for two weekend doubleheaders. The games will take place on Saturday, March 16th in Ashland, and Sunday, March 17th in Columbus. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT both days.
