MIDLAND, MI. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College softball team split a pair of games on Saturday against Northwood University. The Panthers won 7-6 in extra innings on the day's opener, but fell 10-0 in the series finale.
The Panthers (15-17, 6-6 GMAC) scored early as
Chloe Apple drove-in two runs in the top of the first inning with a double to left-centerfield. The Timberwolves answered in the bottom half of the inning with three runs to take a 3-2 lead.
Northwood held the one-run advantage until the top of the fifth when the Panthers rattled-off three runs to take the lead. Apple sparked the rally with a run scoring double while
Kennedy Matheis followed by driving-in two more runs with a double of her own, this one going to the right-centerfield gap.
An RBI single from
Megan Matheis in the sixth inning seemed to provide the Panthers with some insurance, leading 6-3. However, in the bottom of the seventh, the Timberwolves forced extra innings with three runs.
In the eight,
Augusta Garr led off with a single and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Cam Mann. With third base left empty Garr kept running past second to third.
Kristyn Murphy grounded out a batter later to push across the go-ahead run.
Murphy pitched a 1-2-3 bottom half to pick-up her fourth win of the season. Murphy pitched 1.2 inning of relief while
Chloe Williams completed 6.1 innings allowing six runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. Apple finished the game two for five with two doubles and three RBIs.
