OWENSBORO, KY - It was a great day at the ballpark for Kentucky Wesleyan on Tuesday, as they took down the Kentucky State Thorobreds by a score of 22-3. This is Wesleyan's largest win since they defeated the now defunct Ohio Valley University 22-0 on this exact same day in 2021.
Wesleyan earned their runs, as they were hit an incredible 10 times in the contest. That establishes a new Kentucky Wesleyan and G-MAC record, and comes just two shy of the all-time NCAA DII record set back in 1995 by Chico State.
With the win, Wesleyan improves to 9-16, while Kentucky State falls to 11-18.
Despite the score, Kentucky State got on the board first, scoring one run in the top of the first inning. From there the floodgates opened, as Wesleyan scored at least one run in all six of their innings at the plate.
In the first inning,
Cade Moore took advantage of a few wild pitches to scamper home and tie the game. In the second inning,
Rowan Teran was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, then Moore hit a 3 RBI double with the bases loaded to quickly make it 5-1. RBI's from
Kyle Werries and
Braxton French gave Wesleyan a 7-1 lead after two.
The Panthers got five more runs in the third, thanks to RBI's from Teran, Werries, and French. In the fourth,
Cade Moore hit his second double of the day to drive in
TJ Williams, and
Noah Davis got his first RBI to score
Kyle LaVanchy. Moore then scored on a wild pitch for the second time in the game to make it 15-1 after four.
Wesleyan scored seven more runs in the final two innings, with
Hunter Hyden and
Gabriel Medina crossing the plate twice, and
Braden Mundy,
Blaise Wall, and
Kyle LaVanchy scoring once.
Cade Moore was fantastic at the leadoff spot, going 3-for-3 with four runs scored and five RBI's.
Braxton French was 2-for-3 with three RBI's, while
TJ Williams was 1-for-1 with three runs scored.
The Panthers threw five pitchers in the contest, with
David Castleberry (1-0) picking up the win.
Wesleyan, who has won eight of their last nine, will travel to Lake Erie this weekend to take on the Storm in a four-game series. The games will take place in Painesville, Ohio on Friday and Saturday.
