OWENSBORO, KY - The Panther baseball team continued their winning ways on Sunday, taking down Northwood 6-4 and 8-7 to win the weekend series 3-1.
After the series, Wesleyan improves to 8-16 (7-1 G-MAC), while Northwood falls to 10-12 (5-3 G-MAC).
Following this weekend's games, Wesleyan now sits in a tie with Findlay for tops in the G-MAC.
Game One
The first two innings saw the teams mirror each other. Northwood scored in the top of the first, and
Braxton French answered with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning. Northwood notched a 2 RBI double in the top of the second, but
Rowan Teran followed that up with a 2 RBI single in the bottom half of the second. Northwood scored a run in the top half of the third and held a 4-3 lead for much of the game.
In the bottom of the sixth, Wesleyan took advantage of multiple Timberwolf miscues. After an opening inning walk from
Kyle Werries, French got on base thanks to a throwing error by the third baseman. This allowed Werries to be advanced to third, and he made home thanks to a sac fly from
Bryce Zupan. French just made things happen, as he stole third, then scored thanks to an errant throw from the catcher, giving Wesleyan a 5-4 lead. A final run was added due to a solo shot from
Cade Gudalis, his second home run of the year.
While he didn't pick up the win, starter
Brayden Bush was fantastic, as he allowed just one earned run and notched nine strikeouts in five innings of work.
Nick Judd (1-2) allowed just one hit in the final two innings to seal the win.
Cade Gudalis was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored in the game.
Game Two
The second game saw Wesleyan take an early lead, as they went up 4-1 after three. Things got dicey late, as Northwood scored six runs over the 6th through eighth innings. Wesleyan kept their lead in the sixth thanks to an RBI single from
Rowan Teran, and
Braxton French added two huge runs with a two-run home run in the seventh.
With the game tied 7-7 in the eighth,
Cade Gudalis scored on a throwing error, putting Wesleyan up 8-7.
Tavien Tigg pitched a 1-2-3 final inning to seal the win.
Braxton French was 2-for-3 with two RBI's and a run scored, while
Rowan Teran was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Starter
Seth Wright struck out four in six innings of work, while
Tavien Tigg (1-0) allowed just one hit in two innings to notch the first official win of his career.
The Panthers have a solo midweek contest with Kentucky State on Tuesday at 1 p.m. CT, before traveling to Painesville, Ohio, this weekend for a matchup with the Lake Erie Storm.
