Panthers honor seniors against Trevecca; clinch No. 1 seed in G-MAC tournament

OWENSBORO, KY - The #25 Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers honored their four seniors on Saturday in their final regular season home game. The four seniors honored were Kaeveon Mitchell, Fares Remouche, Aleksa Rakic, and Borja Fernandez. The Trevecca Nazarene Trojans spoiled the day, however, as they shot over 50% from the field en-route to a 76-71 victory, snapping Wesleyan's 10-game winning streak.

Despite the loss, Wesleyan still remains co-conference champions with Walsh, and thanks to the PRS (Points Rating System), the Panthers are the #1 seed in the G-MAC tournament next week.

With the win, Trevecca Nazarene improves to 16-12 (11-9 G-MAC), while Wesleyan falls to 21-7 (15-5 G-MAC).

Fighting for spot in the G-MAC tournament, the Trojans came out with a purpose, quickly going up 13-6 on the Panthers. The offensive onslaught by the visitors continued over the next eight minutes, with Trevecca taking a 31-15 lead with 8:25 left in the first half. Borja Fernandez opened a 17-4 Wesleyan run with an and-1 layup, and finished with with yet another bucket, cutting the lead to just 35-32 with 1:40 remaining the half. A cover was put on the rim following Beezy's bucket, as neither team scored to close the half. After being down by as many as 16 at one point, a three-point deficit gave Wesleyan a chance in the second half.

Reigning G-MAC Player of the Week Kennedy Miles opened up the second half with a tough bucket, cutting the lead to just one. Trevecca Nazarene wouldn't let the Panthers take the lead for a while, as the defensive efforts of 6-11 Caleb Terry and the shooting of their guards kept Wesleyan at bay. Eventually Wesleyan worked their way back in it, and a three from Logan McIntire tie dthe game at 49-49 with 13:10 left in the game. The lead was short lived, as the Trojans hit a few buckets to take back the lead halfway through the half. No matter what the Panthers did they couldn't take back the lead the rest of the game. An Edward Jones Jr. free throw tied things up at 60-60 with six minutes remaining, but Trevecca immediately came back with a bucket to take the lead right back. Nothing the Panthers did seemed to work over the final minutes as the Trojans hit a few late free throws to take this one by five.

Wesleyan struggled from the field on Saturday, going just 29-69 (42%) from the field and 1-13 (7.7%) from three. Trevecca Nazarene was 32-60 (53.3%) from the field and 4-18 (22.2%) from behind the arc.

Borja Fernandez, who has been on a tear as of late, led the way with 27 points on 13-26 shooting. Kennedy Miles (10) and Alex Gray (10) also finished in double figures for the home side. Gray nearly notched a double-double as he also led the team with nine boards, while Miles dished out seven assists and added four steals.

The Panthers will host the G-MAC Quarterfinals on Tuesday as the #1 seed. There they will face of #8 seeded Tiffin at 2:15 p.m. CT.
