OWENSBORO, KY - When it rains, it pours. Tuesday afternoon was combination of bad shooting for the Kentucky Wesleyan and good shooting for Tiffin. Down by just one at the half, the G-MAC regular season champion Panthers made just six shots in the second half en-route to a 72-53 defeat to the #8 seeded Dragons.
Tiffin improves to 18-11 (11-9 G-MAC) and will face the winner of Thomas More and Hillsdale at the highest remaining seed after tonight's games. Wesleyan falls to 21-8 (15-5 G-MAC) and now wait to see if they are selected for the NCAA tournament on Sunday.
The Dragons jumped on Wesleyan early, going up 18-5 after seven and a half minutes of play. Tiffin held a 24-12 lead before Wesleyan stormed back, going on a 10-0 run that was fueled by layups from
Borja Fernandez and free throws from
Kennedy Miles.
Logan McIntire was fouled on a three and hit all three free throws, and
Edward Jones Jr. made a layup to complete the comeback and put Wesleyan up 27-26 with 3:26 remaining in the half. The teams went back-and-forth over the final few minutes and Tiffin led 32-31 at the break.
Nothing seemed to fall for Wesleyan in the second half, as they would hit just one shot in the first seven minutes, allowing Tiffin to get up by 10. A bucket by
Alex Gray and a three from
Kaeveon Mitchell kept Wesleyan in it for a while, but Tiffin kept extending their lead. They led by as many as 21 at one point and took this one by 19.
Wesleyan went just 17-55 (30.9%) from the field and 3-24 (12.5%) from three. This includes a 6-27 mark from the field in the second half. Tiffin on the other hand was an even 30-60 (50%) from the field and 6-20 (30%) from three. One positive takeaway was the Panther's free throw shooting, as they were 16-18 (88.9%) from the charity stripe.
NaVuan Peterson and
Edward Jones Jr. each finished with 12 points, while
Kennedy Miles came in with 11. Miles also led the team with seven rebounds and three assists. Constant double teams from the Dragons made it tough on
Borja Fernandez, as he was only 3-6 from the field for six points.
There is hope that this incredible season doesn't have to come to an end, as there is still a chance Wesleyan makes the NCAA tournament. The final edition of the Midwest Region Rankings will come out tomorrow afternoon, with the NCAA tournament field being announced on Sunday night.
