ASHLAND, OH. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College softball team lost a pair of heartbreakers on Saturday afternoon to Ashland University. The Panthers fell in extra innings 5-4 in the day's opener before a 5-3 loss in the series finale.
Chloe Williams gave Wesleyan a quality start on the day.
In the second inning of the opener, the Panthers utilized some two-out magic as
Shelbi Patterson drove in the first two runs of the game with triple. The Eagles scored a run in the bottom half and then tied the game with a run in the fourth.
The game remined tied into the seventh when the Panthers rallied again with two-outs. After a walk and a hit batter, Wesleyan had two runners on for
Chloe Apple. Apple connected with a double to right center that plated two runs. Ashland scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning with two-outs to force extra innings.
The Panthers threatened in the top of the eight but left two runners on base. The Eagles ended the game with a run in the bottom of the eighth. Williams pitched a complete game, 7.1 innings allowing five runs, four earned on nine hits with five strikeouts.
Brooke Brown finished the game three for four with a double and stolen base.
The Eagles built a 4-0 lead after three innings of game two, but the Panthers bounced back. In the top of the fourth
Guinny Garr started a rally with a two-out single. Followed by a walk by
Allie Dunn and a single by Apple, the bases were loaded.
Grace Colvin cut the deficit in half with a two-run single into center.
An error allowed the Panthers to get one run closer in the fifth, but the Eagles ended the threat and added an insurance run in the sixth. Ashland kept the Panthers scoreless in the seventh to end the game. Colvin finished the game two for three with two RBIs.
The Panthers will travel to Columbus, Ohio on Sunday for two games against Ohio Dominican. First pitch is scheduled for 11AM CT.
