CRESTVIEW HILLS, KY - It felt like deja vu on Saturday, as for the second time in as many games
Borja Fernandez went off against Thomas More, this time scoring 35 points on 16-22 from the field. Not to be outdone,
Kennedy Miles was phenomenal, going 10-12 from the field and 4-4 from three en route to a 25 point, four rebound performance.
This win gets the Panthers that much closer to securing the G-MAC regular season title, as they now sit a 20-6 (14-4 G-MAC). Thomas More falls to 15-11 (10-8 G-MAC).
No one could break away in the first half, as the largest lead of the opening 20 minutes was just five points. That 20-15 deficit quickly turned into a 22-20 advantage for the Panthers, thanks to two buckets from
Kennedy Miles and a layup from
Borja Fernandez. The final six minutes were the definition of a back-and-forth affair, as each team lost the lead as soon as they got it. A late layup by Beezy put Wesleyan up three, but an and-1 from TMU's Rylee Mitchell made it a 40-40 game at the half.
Down early in the second half, Fernandez scored five quick points and
Edward Jones Jr. made a layup to cut the Saints' lead to just 48-47 with 15 minutes left in the game. With Thomas More still leading 60-57, Jones Jr. hit a three to cap off an 8-0 run that saw the Panthers take a five point lead with 7:45 left in the game. Thomas More cut it to two, but Fernandez scored six straight points, and Miles hit a dagger three to seal the big victory.
Thanks to Fernandez's presence inside, the Panthers outscored the Saints 50-30 in the paint.
For the game, Wesleyan was 32-56 (57.1%) from the field and 6-12 (50%) from three. They helped themselves by going 10-10 from the charity stripe. Thomas More was 29-60 (48.3%) from the field and 7-20 (35%) from behind the arc.
Borja Fernandez (35) and
Kennedy Miles (25) combined to score 60 of the Panthers, going 26-34 from the field between the two.
Alex Gray helped out with 11 points and seven huge rebounds.
The Panthers have a big game on Thursday as they take on the Ohio Dominican Panthers, before they host Trevecca Nazarene for senior day on Saturday. Tipoff for Thursday's contest is scheduled for 7:45pm CT.
