CEDARVILLE, OH - Another day, another win for the Panthers.
Drew Cooper and his Kentucky Wesleyan Men's Basketball team marched into Cedarville on Thursday riding a seven-game winning streak, and they used a 51-point outburst in the second half to walk out with another game added to that streak. The duo of
Kennedy Miles and
Edward Jones Jr. led the way, as they finished with 26 and 25 points respectively, both of which were career highs.
Kentucky Wesleyan now sits at 19-6 (13-4 G-MAC), while Cedarville falls to 17-10 (11-6 G-MAC).
Just like their game in Owensboro a few weeks ago, Wesleyan came out of the gates firing on all cylinders.
Borja Fernandez,
Kennedy Miles, and
Edward Jones Jr. all hit threes to quickly put the Panthers ahead 12-8, and two threes a few minutes later off the hands of
Aleksa Rakic and
Logan McIntire doubled up the Yellow Jackets 20-10. Despite cooling off a bit, Wesleyan held their lead, as a couple buckets from Jones Jr. kept the Panthers up 27-19 with 8:54 remaining in the half. Another Jones Jr. three made it 34-29 in favor of the visitors, but Cedarville stormed back with a 10-0 run to take their first lead since the opening minutes of the game. The Yellow Jackets used that momentum to take a 44-39 lead at the break.
Early in the second half it felt like Wesleyan would never re-take the lead, as Cedarville answered every Panther bucket with one of their own. After being down by no more than five points the first nine minutes of the second half, Wesleyan finally tied the game up thanks to a huge three from
Kennedy Miles. Miles put the team on his back the next possession, spinning around his defender with a nice up and under move to give Wesleyan their first lead of the second half, 69-67.
Edward Jones Jr. then came alive, hitting back-to-back threes to put Wesleyan up 75-67 with 7:27 left in the game.
Borja Fernandez made it a 10-point Panther lead with a bucket a few minutes later. Fernandez, Miles,
Alex Gray, and
Kaeveon Mitchell hit their free throws late to seal the huge 90-77 victory.
Wesleyan shot 32-64 (50%) from the field and an impressive 14-27 (51.9%) from behind the arc. The Panther defense forced one of the most efficient teams in the G-MAC into a mediocre shooting night, as the Yellow Jackets finished 31-71 (43.7%) from the field and 10-32 (31.3%) from three. This was a clean game on both sides, as the Panthers committed just five turnovers and Cedarville coughed it up just four times.
Kennedy Miles, who has been on a tear lately, continued his strong season by going 9-20 from the field for 26 points.
Edward Jones Jr. was 10-16 from the field and 5-9 from three for a career high 25 points. Coming off his career high against Thomas More last week,
Borja Fernandez finished with 14 points.
Alex Gray, who only put up six points on the offensive end, kept the Panthers in it thanks to his 12 boards, five of which were on the offensive end. Miles led with six assists, while Gray finished just behind with five.
Wesleyan has another tough test on Saturday, as they travel to Crestview Heights, Kentucky to take on Thomas More. The Saints will have fresh legs as they will not have played since their double-overtime loss to the Panthers in Owensboro last Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT., and you can listen in at 94.7 WBIO.
