Hilltoppers Escape Panthers' Upset Bid

BOWLING GREEN, KY. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College men's basketball team showcased a highly functional offense inside Diddle Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers lost an exhibition game to Western Kentucky 91-71. The contest was a regular season contest for the Hilltoppers who moved to 9-3 overall.

The final score was not indicative to the amount of pressure Wesleyan was able to apply, along with their ability to get to the basket throughout the game. The Panthers came out swinging. After winning the opening tip, Kennedy Miles nailed a three-point basket. On the following possession Logan McIntire connect from deep to give the Panthers a 6-0 lead.

Through the first 10 minutes of the contest the Panthers were converting over 70% of their shots from the field. The Hilltoppers were matching the Panthers perimeter prowess throughout the contest. After an exchange of three-point shots ending with Kaeveon Mitchell's shot from distance, the Panthers held a 27-26 lead.

Alex Gray gave the Panthers a 37-33 lead with 6:25 left in the frame, but Julius Thedford provided the WKU response with a three-point shot on the following possession. The Hilltoppers continued to try and find some separation and finished the half with a 46-41 lead. Wesleyan converted at a 57% rate from the field while the Hilltoppers were shooting at 45%.

The Panthers shooting cooled-off in the second half, but their ability to get the basket continued to the finish. Wesleyan scored 26 points in the paint on the day, proving much frustration for the Hilltoppers. With eight minutes left, WKU led 69-61 and expanded their led with a late three-point shots in the final four minutes. WKU made good on 13 three-point shots while the Panthers finished with 11 threes.

Quentin Toles finished the game with 15 points, six assists, and five rebounds. Both Miles and Fatih Huyuk added 14 points. Huyuk led the Panthers with six rebounds. Miles and Alex Gray each dished out five assists.

The Panthers will return to the court in the New Year with Great Midwest action. Wesleyan will host Cedarville University on January 2nd. Tip-off at the historic Owensboro Sportscenter is scheduled for 7:45PM.
