Panthers Edge Out Illinois-Springfield in Back-and-Forth Battle

Springfield, Ill. – The Kentucky Wesleyan men's basketball team edged out a 70-64 road triumph over Illinois-Springfield on Wednesday night.

Wesleyan improved to 5-2 overall (0-0 G-MAC), having won five straight games, while the Prairie Stars fell to 4-6 overall (1-3 GLVC).

The Panthers started fast, scoring the game's first nine points as Fatih Huyuk scored six in that frame. Illinois-Springfield responded with an 8-0 run and the first half was a back-and-forth affair from there.

Wesleyan built their lead back up to 28-21 after a Logan McIntire three, but Illinois-Springfield recorded the final five points of the half as the Panthers took a 28-26 advantage into the break.

The second half continued to be a close contest, as an IUS three-pointer tied the game at 60 with just four minutes to go, but consecutive layups by Kennedy Miles then put the Panthers up for good. Quentin Toles iced the victory with a jumper and a couple free throws in the final minutes of play.

Miles had a team-high 17 points on 7-13 shooting and McIntire came in right behind him with 15 points and four threes, continuing his scorching three-point barrage.

Toles (11 points), Edward Jones Jr. (10 points), and Huyuk (10 points) joined the prior two in double figures for Wesleyan. Alex Gray continued to do it all with seven points, seven rebounds, and four assists.

The Panthers next battle the Ashland Eagles in the second game of their current three-game road trip. First tip is set for 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 14, as Wesleyan begins G-MAC play.
