Panthers Upset at the Buzzer

JEFFERSON CITY, MO. – It went down to the wire on Sunday afternoon. The Kentucky Wesleyan College men's basketball team was seemingly in control, but a late turnover and miss dunk allowed Lincoln University to connect on a last second three-point basket to upset the Panthers 72-69 in a non-conference affair.

Four players reached double figures in the loss while Alex Gray flirted with triple-double. Wesleyan falls to 0-2 early in the season while the Blue Tigers improve to 2-0.

In a game that featured three ties and nine lead changes the Panthers controlled a majority of the contest, including the opening jump as Quinten Toles popped an opening three. The Panthers held a 26-22 lead with six minutes left in the opening period when a quick 11-3 rally built their largest lead of the game, 37-25.

Kennedy Miles hit back-to-back threes and a lay-up in the rally while Fatih Huyuk converted an easy lay-up in the run. The Blue Tigers scored the last seven points in the final two minutes of the half to pull within 37-32 at the break. The run continued at the start of the second half has Lincoln started the frame with back-to-back threes to take a 38-37 lead. Toles put an end to the run with an immediate bucket, returning a lead to the Panthers.

Wesleyan continued to build upon its lead through the first 10 minutes of the second period. Alex Gray found Terrence Ringo Jr. for a dunk midway through the frame that established a 54-46 lead.

The Blue Tigers would not go away as they chipped away and with 2:30 left took a 66-65 lead. Miles answered with a driving lay-up to return a one-point edge. With 90 seconds left Malcolm Davis hit a three to give Lincoln a 69-67 lead. On the ensuing possession Gray got to the basket and was fouled. After two free throws the game was tied at 69.

Lincoln's Frank Yetna missed two free throws with 50 seconds left and Logan McIntire got the rebound. The Panthers turned the ball over on the next possession giving the Blue Tigers another opportunity, but a missed three resulted in a quick transition of events. Still tied, the Panthers missed a dunk while LU got the rebound and Xavier Ball fired a last second shot to give the Blue Tigers the win as time expired.

Miles finished with 16 points and six rebounds to lead the Panthers. Gray added 12 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists. Ringo recorded 12 points and five rebounds while Huyuk ended the game with 11 points. The Blue Tigers finished the game with five turnovers while the Panthers finished with 11.

The Panthers will host Simmons on Thursday for their home-opener. Tip-off at the historic Owensboro Sportscenter is scheduled for 7PM.
