CRESTVIEW HILLS, KY. – In a highly competitive match, the Kentucky Wesleyan College women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision against Thomas More University. With a flurry of action early, it was the defenses that took the spotlight in the end.
The Panthers (3-9, 2-6 G-MAC) fell behind in the second minute of the contest as the Saints found a way to score.
Mariah Winge quickly attempted to counter, but her shot in the sixth minute was saved. In fact, all the scoring occurred in the first 25 minutes of the match.
The Saints (5-4-3, 2-4-3 G-MAC) held the lead until the 22
nd minute.
Steeley Walker drew attention and quickly passed to
Sierra Mullins who put away the equalizer. Three minutes later, in the 25
th minute, the Saints scored again.
Claudia Melgar looked to tie the match right before halftime, but her shot was off-line. The Saints took 11 shots in the opening frame to the Panthers' three.
Each defense took over in the second period as shots were hard to come by.
Haylie Panter looked to tie the game in the 64
th minute, but Saints' keeper Natalie Kindt made the save to preserve a 2-1 advantage. Walker had a chance in the 70
th minute but her shot sailed over the top of the crossbar.
The Panthers got two more chances it the final 10 minutes, but both shots were off-target. Mullins finished the match with three shots and a goal.
Kassidy Elkin made three saves.
The Panthers will return home on Thursday to host Lake Erie College. The match at Panther Field is scheduled for 5PM.
