OWENSBORO, KY - There aren't many things better than winning on Homecoming, and Head Coach
Tyrone Young and his Panthers have now won two straight. In a defensive slugfest, Wesleyan put together a drive that ended with a
Camden Williams touchdown reception with just 35 seconds remaining to seal a win over Ohio Dominican. This comes after last year's 31-27 triumph over Hillsdale.
Prior to the game, Kentucky Wesleyan honored the 1983 football team, who are celebrating their 40th anniversary of being the first modern football team in Kentucky Wesleyan history.
This win is a milestone for multiple reasons, as it keeps Coach Young undefeated on Homecoming, gives Wesleyan their first ever win over Ohio Dominican, and gets them their best start since 2010.
Wesleyan improves to 3-1 (2-0 G-MAC) with the win while ODU falls to 1-3 (0-2 G-MAC) with the loss.
After a few drives that didn't lead to anything for both teams, Ohio Dominican got on the board first, scoring on a four-yard rushing touchdown late in the first quarter to go up 7-0 after one.
On the opening drive of the second quarter,
Christian Arrambide and the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers put on a big 11-play, 89-yard drive that ended with an Arrambide rushing touchdown. Down 7-6, an interception put KWC in a vulnerable position late in the half, as ODU had the ball on the Panther's 27-yard line. The Wesleyan defense held strong, as a big sack from
Bishop Byrd and
Jackson Ray led to a field goal from ODU. Wesleyan went into the half trailing 10-6.
Neither team was able to get a point in the third quarter.
Najai Watson helped Wesleyan hold off the ODU attack with a big interception near the beginning of the frame. Later in the quarter,
Ja'Kobe North forced an ODU fumble that was recovered by Watson for his second takeaway of the game. The third quarter ended the same as the second, with Wesleyan down 10-6.
Both defenses held for much of the fourth quarter, as Wesleyan started what would be their final drive of the game at the 4:31 mark still staring at a 10-6 deficit. After driving his team down the field,
Christian Arrambide hit his star receiver
Camden Williams for a 7-yard touchdown pass to take a big 12-10 lead with just 35 seconds remaining in the game. A
Blake Vivrette extra point made it so that Ohio Dominican would have to score a touchdown if they wanted to win. The 35 seconds on the clock was too tall of a task for Ohio Dominican against a staunch Panther defense, and Wesleyan would walk away with the big 13-10 victory.
Christian Arrambide was 18-for-26 with 130 yards, and both a passing and rushing touchdown.
Kam Sherrard led with 42 yards receiving, while
Gordon Anaple came through with some clutch plays that amounted to 35 yards receiving.
It was a team effort on defense tonight, as 18 Panthers registered a tackle.
Bishop Byrd and
Kajuan Hardesty led the way with six tackles each.
Josh Williams and
Zereoue Johnson each recorded a sack.
Najai Watson's interception was his second of the season, and the fumble recover was his first.
Wesleyan hits the road next week for a big G-MAC contest with Findlay, who currently sits at 3-1 (2-0 G-MAC) and are coming off a 31-21 win over Hillsdale. Game time is set for 3 p.m. CT.
