OWENSBORO, KY - Both teams had their chances, but in the end it was the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers who came out victorious.
Matteo Napoletano rocketed a volley into the back of the net in the 82nd minute of play to give Wesleyan the 1-0 win over the visiting Northwood Timberwolves.
With the win Wesleyan moves to 4-1-2 (1-1-1 G-MAC), while Northwood drops to 1-4-2 (0-2-1 G-MAC).
The Panthers opened the game looking to score early, as
Matteo Napoletano,
Calum Newson, and
Jacob Boling all got off shots in the first 10 minutes of play. Northwood held strong and didn't allow the Panthers to score, even after two shots by
Haakon Torvbraaten in the final minutes of the opening half.
Northwood pressed hard in the second half, shooting the ball 13 times. Despite all those shots, only two were on frame, both of which goalie
Arthur Hill saved. Late in the second half, Boling hit a cross that looked as though it hit off a Northwood defender's hand, and as the players stopped waiting for a call,
Matteo Napoletano hit it off the bounce and into the back of the net, giving him his fifth goal of the season. The Timberwolves had a few chances late, but the strong defense of
Max Wawrin,
Moritz Bauernfeind,
Jonas Driesch, and
Zach Moore held strong for the home side.
Napoletano's goal was his fifth of the year, giving him a team leading 12 points.
Arthur Hill made two saves in the shutout win.
Wesleyan will look to go for a weekend sweep on Saturday when they take on Ashland for Homecoming. The Eagles are coming off a 2-1 loss at Trevecca Nazarene tonight. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. CT.
