LEESBURG, FL - After two heartbreaking losses yesterday, the Kentucky Wesleyan Softball Team got back on their feet today, taking down Upper Iowa 5-2, and shutting out Wheeling 4-0.
Game One
Upper Iowa (3-4) got on the board first, scoring two runs in the opening inning to take a quick 2-0 lead on the Panthers (5-14). That lead was short lived, however, as
Shelbi Patterson and
Augusta Garr scored in the bottom of the inning thanks to a three run bomb from
Megan Matheis.
Up 3-2 after one, Wesleyan added some insurance runs in the second, with
Kennedy Matheis and
Grace Colvin each walking with the bases loaded to put the Panthers up 5-2. The pitching settled down from there, as neither team was able to score. Upper Iowa managed to get two on in the final inning, but
Immi Mann shut them down to earn her first win of the year.
Grace Colvin went 2-for-2 with an RBI, while
Megan Matheis' home run gave her a team leading 3 RBI's.
Immi Mann (1-7) went the distance, allowing just two runs in seven innings of work.
Game Two
Facing Wheeling (1-9) in game two,
Allie Dunn (4-7) threw the first shutout of her Panther career, allowing just four hits in seven innings of work to get the scoreless victory.
Megan Matheis came through to put the Panthers ahead in the first, hitting an RBI double to score
Shelbi Patterson and take an early 1-0 lead.
Holding that precarious 1-0 lead, Wesleyan added some insurance runs in the top of the seventh.
Immi Mann opened the inning with a single, and a
Sarah Linville sacrifice bunt moved her to second. A Patterson walk and an
Augusta Garr hit by pitch loaded the bases.
Megan Matheis continued her strong freshman campaign, hitting a bases loaded single to score Patterson and Mann.
Allie Dunn hit an RBI single a few batters later to make it a comfortable 4-0 game.
Dunn pitched a 1-2-3 final inning to secure the win.
Megan Matheis went 2-for-3 with three RBI's and a walk, and
Grace Colvin added two hits.
Shelbi Patterson is having an incredible season on the base path, as she is tied for the G-MAC lead with 13 stolen bases on the year, only being caught one time.
Megan Matheis is leading the G-MAC with 27 hits already, including eight multi-hit games.
The Panthers will look to continue their winnings ways tomorrow as they take on Ferris State at 11:30 a.m. CT, and Missouri-St. Louis at 2 p.m. CT.
