Panthers Drop Pair to Malone

CANTON, Ohio – The Kentucky Wesleyan College softball dropped a pair of games to Malone University on Monday afternoon. The contest originally scheduled for noon eastern time was delayed due to rain showers on Monday morning. The Pioneers took the opener 13-5 before the Panthers fell in a 8-0 shutout in the finale.

The Panthers left two runners on base to start the game as the Pioneers (8-12, 2-2 GMAC) opened the bottom of the first with a single, followed by a two-run homerun. Two outs later, a solo homerun extended the Malone lead to 3-0. Malone added five more runs in the second after five hits and two errors in the frame.

Augusta Garr got the Panthers started in the top of the third with a one-out double. Meg Matheis reached on an error while Garr came around to score on a Kennedy Matheis' sacrifice fly. Grace Colvin followed with an RBI double that brought Wesleyan back to 8-2.

Malone got both runs back in the bottom of the fourth, but the Panthers responded in kind in the top of the fifth inning. Megan Matheis led off the inning with a homerun, Kennedy then followed with a walk. After a single by Colvin there were two runners aboard with one out for Guinny Garr. Garr singled to center to load the bases for Immi Mann. A double by Mann down the left-field line brought two more runs in for the Panthers.

The Panthers trailed 10-5 heading into the bottom of the fifth before the Pioneers added three more runs to end the game. Allie Dunn pitched 4.1 innings with three strikeouts.

The Panthers collected two hits in the finale as the Pioneers won 8-0. Mann pitched four innings with two strikeouts.

Wesleyan will open Foster Field on Saturday with a double-header against Ashland. First pitch is scheduled for 12 PM.
