Panthers Swinging Hot Bats at Chillout

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College softball team opened their season on Friday afternoon at the Charger Chillout hosted by the University of Alabama Huntsville. The Panthers opened with a 13-5 win over Miles before falling to Christian Brothers to end the day.
 
The Golden Bears opened with two runs in the top of the first innings, but the Panthers (1-1) bounced right back with two runs in the bottom half. Megan Matheis tied the game with a one-out, two-run single down the leftfield line. Guinny Garr then gave the Panthers the lead in the bottom of the second with a two-run single through the right side of the infield.
 
Wesleyan would score five runs in the bottom of the second inning. Kennedy Matheis drove in another run with a sacrifice fly while an error later in the frame allowed the other two runs to cross the plate. Megan Matheis lead-off the fourth with a homerun while Kennedy followed with a single. Kennedy would eventually come around to score on Grace Colvin's RBI single.
 
Back-to-back RBI singles from Shelbi Patterson and Sarah Linville later in the fourth inning brought the Panthers' lead to 11-2. The Golden Bears added two in the fifth and one run in the sixth inning to pull within 11-5. Linville homered to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning while Kennedy Matheis gave the Panthers a inning off as she ended the game with a RBI single.
 
Megan Matheis ended the game three for five with a homerun and three RBIs. Linville was four for four with a homerun and two RBIs. Allie Dunn was one for four at the plate and pitched a complete game to earn her first win in a Panthers' uniform. Dunn went six innings allowing five runs, two earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.
 
Christian Brothers scored nine in the first and eight in the second in defeating the Panthers 25-2. Megan Matheis finished the game with an RBI triple while Sarah Linville connected on her second homerun of the season.
 
The Panthers will play two more games at the Charger Chillout on Saturday. First pitch against Shorter will be at 11 AM while the second game of the day against Delta State will start at 4 PM.
