WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College baseball team jumped out to an early lead over Palm Beach Atlantic on Friday afternoon, but could not finish the Sailfish off. The Panthers eventually fell 19-5 to PBA in the Sunshine State.
The Sailfish improved to 4-0 on the young season while the Panthers drop to 0-2 in their opening week. PBA struck first with an RBI double off
Seth Wright in the opening inning. Wright settled in and completed three innings, leaving the game with the lead.
The Panthers patient approach at the plate for the second straight game allowed them to cause problems for their opponent.
Zach Curtis and
Nick Wimber started the top of the second inning with back to back singles, Curtis eventually came around to score on a wild pitch. Wesleyan put runners on second and third in the inning with one-out, but PBA got out of the frame with back-to-back strikeouts.
Wesleyan again set the table in the top of the third with
Cameron Langston taking a one-out walk,
Jaret Humphrey followed with a double to put runners in scoring position. The Panthers then loaded the bases with Curtis coaxing a walk. Wimber gave the Panthers a lead with a sacrifice fly.
After a pass ball,
Cade Gudalis walked to load the bases again. A wild pitch allowed another run to come home then a throwing error gave the Panthers two more runs and a 5-1 lead. PBA answered in the bottom half scoring three runs on three hits and a error. The Sailfish then broke the game open in the fourth with a six-run frame. Leading 10-5, PBA added two more runs in each of the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.
Both Humphrey and
Aric Lyons finished the game with extra base hits while Wimber recorded the lone RBI.
The Panthers will finish off the trip tomorrow morning with a game against Lynn University. First pitch is scheduled for 11 AM CT.
