OWENSBORO, KY - It was a fun afternoon at the Owensboro Sportscenter, as the Kentucky Wesleyan Men's Basketball team doubled up the visiting Simmons Falcons 102-51. Wesleyan used a 54-21 rebounding advantage to get the win.
Borja Fernandez scored 18 points in just 19 minutes, while
Edward Jones Jr. tallied 11 points and 10 rebounds to notch the first double-double of his career.
Wesleyan now sits at 2-2 (0-0 G-MAC), while Simmons falls to 1-5.
Tied 4-4 early,
Borja Fernandez knocked in a layup that gave Wesleyan the lead, one they would not relinquish the rest of the game. Despite the final score, the opening 10 minutes of this game were close, with Wesleyan holding on to a 20-15 advantage with 9:53 remaining in the first half.
Jake Evans then banged in a three, igniting a 22-3 run that put Wesleyan up 42-18 with 3:35 left in the half.
Logan McIntire made a layup, and Wesleyan hit five more free throws to go into the break up 49-29.
Fernandez imposed his will at the beginning of the second half, scoring six of Wesleyan's first eight points. A few minutes later, Evans and
Kaeveon Mitchell hit back-to-back threes to extend the Panther lead to 31 (64-33). After that Wesleyan cruised to the finish, outscoring the Falcons 37-16 the rest of the way en-route to the 51-point victory.
As stated earlier,
Borja Fernandez let the way with 18 points, going an efficient 8-for-11 from the field.
Edward Jones Jr. notched 11 points and 10 boards, six of which were offensive rebounds. Joining those two in double-figures was
Kaeveon Mitchell and freshman
Dom Subota.
Wesleyan shot an impressive 34-61 (55.7%) from the field, and 9-25 (36%) from three. Almost half of their points came from the bench, as they tallied a season high 50 bench points. The Panthers held Simmons to just 16-57 (28.1%) from the field and 4-18 (22.2%) from behind the arc. Kentucky Wesleyan handed out 22 assists on their 34 makes, while Simmons notched just seven.
The Panthers will have a bit of a break, as they won't be back in action until Tuesday, November 28th, when they host Campbellsville-Harrodsburg at the Owensboro Sportscenter. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
