CANTON, OH - Tied 1-1 with Malone late,
Bree Owen wasn't satisfied with just a tie. In what was the definition of picture perfect transition play, the Panthers took just four passes to move the ball three quarters up the field.
Haley Osborne touched the ball through a defender's legs, hitting a streaking Owen, who rocketed a shot into the back of the net to give the Panthers a 2-1 victory.
Wesleyan now moves to 1-8 (1-6 G-MAC) while Malone drops to 5-5 (2-5 G-MAC).
The Panthers were on the offensive early, with
Claudia Melgar shooting multiple shots in the opening few minutes of the game. After a
Chloe Hinchcliffe shot was saved in the 29th minute,
Haley Osborne ran in and tapped it in to score the game's opening goal. No one was able to score the rest of the half and the Panther went into the locker room up 1-0.
Malone came back and answered with a goal of their own in the 73rd minute. The Panthers didn't let that deter them, putting up four more shots before
Bree Owen scored the late game winner.
The Panthers put up 15 shots compared to just eight for Malone, and held a 7-6 edge in shots-on-goal.
Bree Owen's goal was her second of the season, as was
Haley Osborne's.
Kassidy Elkin and
Elizabeth Burns combined to make five saves for the Panthers.
This was Wesleyan's second straight win over the Pioneers, after beating them 2-0 last year in Owensboro.
The Panthers will look to keep their winning ways going this Saturday when they travel to Painesville, Ohio, to take on the Lake Erie Storm. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. CT.
