OWENSBORO, KY - Facing midwest regional power Hillsdale, the Panthers put up a great fight, but eventually fell 3-0 (15-25, 20-25, 27-29) to their foes from up north.
Hillsdale improves to 19-5 (11-2 G-MAC), while Wesleyan falls to 6-19 (4-10 G-MAC).
With the Panthers up 11-10 in the opening set, the Chargers went on a 6-0 run to go up 16-11. That run was enough to change the momentum of the set, as Hillsdale cruised to the 25-15 win.
Early runs were the story of the second set. Led by a kill from
Ava Rebarchik and two aces from
Julia Kupper, the Panthers jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Hillsdale came right back, taking an 8-5 lead after an 8-1 run .The Panthers answered, using two kills from both
Claire Lange and
Mariah Jones to take back a 9-8 lead. It was a back-and-forth battle for a few points, before Hillsdale took the lead on a 7-0 run. Wesleyan failed to make a comeback, and the Chargers took the set 25-20.
Neither team could pull away in the third set, with two kills from
Nicole Hughes keeping the game tied at 21-21. The teams went back-and-forth again, with Wesleyan eventually takinga 25-24 lead on a service ace from
Embry Burgess. A
Hallie McGuire kill gave Wesleyan another set point, but the Chargers closed on a 4-1 run to take the set.
Hallie McGuire led with nine kills, followed by
Mariah Jones with seven.
Julia Kupper dished out 21 assists, while
Stella Kleffman had 21 digs. Kupper also added three aces, while
Ava Rebarchik had notched four blocks.
The Panthers will close out the home portion of their schedule tomorrow when they take on the Northwood Timberwolves for senior day. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m., and the seniors will be honored 10 minutes prior to the game.
