OWENSBORO, KY - It was the senior sendoff everyone wanted, as the Kentucky Wesleyan Men's Soccer team honored their seniors with a huge 1-0 win over Trevecca Nazarene on Wednesday. The lone Panther goal was scored by none other than
Matteo Napoletano, one of the seniors being honored. His free kick in the second half was the difference in this tightly contested game.
The Panthers honored seniors
Maxten Miller,
Declan Sandifer,
Max Wawrin,
Matteo Napoletano,
Jacob Russ, and
Zach Moore before the game.
These two teams played about as even as you could, with Trevecca leading in shots 16-12, but Wesleyan leading 3-2 in shots-on-goal. Despite both teams having great chances in the the first half, the breakthrough came in the second, when
Matteo Napoletano lined up a free kick and curled it right around the Trojan wall for the game's only goal. Goalie Athur Hill and the Panther defense held strong, as they fended off four late shots by the Trojans to seal the shutout victory.
Not only was this a big win for the program and the seniors, it was also a great win for goalkeeper
Arthur Hill, who now sits alone at the top of the Kentucky Wesleyan all-time wins list. This win not only gave him the record, but was also his fourth shutout win of the season.
This is Napoletano's second 1-0 game winning goal this season, as he also scored the lone goal against Northwood earlier this year.
The Panthers now sit in sixth in the G-MAC with 17 points. While this win was big for the Panther's playoff hopes, Wesleyan is not mathematically into the G-MAC tournament just yet. They still have one more game to officially secure a spot, as the Panthers travel to Nashville next Tuesday to take on this same Trojan squad. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. CT at Trevecca Nazarene.
