OWENSBORO, KY. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College volleyball team finished the Midwest Crossover with a split on Saturday. The Panthers took down Drury in five sets, but exited the largest volleyball tournament in the nation with a 3-0 loss to Southwest Baptist.
The Panthers were efficient in the opening set against Drury, winning 25-22. Wesleyan notched 17 kills in the opener. Wesleyan trailed 20-16, but won nine of the last 11 points to take an early 1-0 lead.
Ava Rebarchik recorded two kills in the run while
Hallie McGuire iced the set with an ace.
The second set was equally as thrilling as the Drury tied the frame at 19. The Panthers again closed out the set with a rally, winning six of the final nine points. After Wesleyan second consecutive 25-22-win Drury won the third and fourth frames 26-24 and 25-23.
Drury was able to score the final four points in the third and the last five points in the fourth to tie the match. The back-and-forth battled continued in the fifth set as Drury held a 14-13 lead. A kill by
Julia Kupper followed by a kill from McGuire gave the Panthers a 15-14 lead. An ace by Kupper ended the match 16-14.
Nicole Hughes finished with 19 kills while McGuire added 14. Rebarchik and
Claire Lange each finished with 11 kills. Kupper ended the match with 51 assists.
Southwest Baptist won the final match of the Crossover in straight sets, 25-19, 25-11, 25-15. McGuire finished with seven kills while Kupper had 14 assists.
The Panthers will return to Great Midwest Action on Thursday with a match at Ashland. The contest is scheduled to start at 6 PM CT.
