Panthers knock off Cedarville in Ohio

CEDARVILLE, OH - Knowing a win would be massive towards their journey to making the G-MAC tournament, the Panthers managed to squeak out a 1-0 win over the Cedarville Yellow Jackets thanks to a late goal from Calum Newson. After going 0-19-0 in their first 19 games against the Yellow Jackets, the Panthers are now 2-0-1 in their last three games.

The Panthers move to 6-3-4 (3-3-3 G-MAC) while Cedarville dropped to 6-3-3 (3-2-3 G-MAC).

Defense was the name of the game in the first half, as the back line of Max Wawrin, Moritz Bauernfeind, Cole Greenshields, and Zach Moore allowed just two shots from the home side during the entire opening half. Wesleyan managed only two shots themselves, with attempts by Calum Newson and Matteo Napoletano both being saved by the Cedarville goalie.

The second half saw a lot more action, as the teams combined for 10 total shots, five on each side. The Panthers got a great look from Haakon Torvbraaten in the 65th minute, but his curling change was saved by Cedarville Goalie Jabari Gray. In the 77th minute, Napoletano managed to get by two defenders and lot a ball perfectly past the defender right to the foot of Newson, who fired the shot into the back of the net to give the Panthers the lead. Cedarville made a ferocious comeback attempt late, but saves from Arthur Hill, and also the woodwork, helped lead the Panthers to victory.

Calum Newson led the Panthers with three shots in the game, with all of them being on goal. His score in the 77th minute was his fourth goal of the season, bringing his career total to an impressive 24, good for eighth all time in KWC history. Also moving up the record books was goalie Arthur Hill, who now sits in a tie for first with Lucas Daunhauer and Andrew Minton with nine career wins.

The Panthers now have 12 points in the conference, putting them in a tie for fourth with just five games to play. The top eight teams in the conference at the end of the regular season will qualify for the G-MAC tournament.

Wesleyan's next game will be on Saturday, when they host Findlay for senior day. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
