Panthers rout Brescia to close non-conference slate

OWENSBORO, KY - After a splitting two close games against Lincoln Memorial and UMSL, the Panthers left nothing to chance in Wednesday's matchup vs. Brescia, pouring in nine goals en-route to a resounding 9-2 victory. This is the largest win for the Panthers since a 9-1 victory over Ohio Valley back in 2013. KWC now owns a 21-13-3 lead in their career series vs. the Bearcats.

With the win the Panthers now move to 3-1 on the season, while Brescia drops to 0-6.

Fueled by the fire of falling in last year's matchup, sophomore sensation Calum Newson got on the board early with his first goal coming in just the ninth minute of play. Maxten Miller picked up his first goal of the season 10 minutes later with a poke around the goalie off the assist from Jake Peveler. After a Brescia goal cut the Panther's lead in half, Newson came back to score his second of the day and gave Wesleyan a 3-1 lead at the break.

The Panthers opened the second half by scoring six goals in a matter of just 14 minutes. Just five minutes in, Julian Gonzalez put one in off the double assist from Max Wawrin and Newson. Newson, already sitting on two goals, completed his hat trick less than one minute later, scoring an impressive solo goal to give him his first hat trick of his career. Wesleyan didn't let up, as Declan Sandifer, Max Wawrin, Theo White, and Santiago Henrich all put one in the back of the net over the next few minutes. Wesleyan cruised over the final 25 minutes of play for the commanding seven-goal victory.

Starter Arthur Hill was extremely solid in goal, making six saves in the game.

Along with his three goals, Calum Newson also handed out four assists, tied for the most all time in KWC history. Newson's 10 points in a single game obliterated the eight-year old school record of seven, which was formerly held by Christakis Agisilaou from a 2014 matchup against Brescia.

Wesleyan outshot the Bearcats 19-13 in the game, with KWC holding a 14-8 advantage in shots-on-goal.

Wesleyan will begin conference play this saturday when they host Tiffin at 3:30 p.m. The Dragons currently sit at 1-1 and open G-MAC play on Thursday at Trevecca Nazarene.
