Tyrone Young gets first head coaching victory in defensive battle with Missouri S&T

OWENSBORO, KY - The Kentucky Wesleyan Panther's football team was dominant on defense Saturday night, holding Missouri S&T to just 118 yards of total offense en route to an 11-6 victory. It was a big night for new head coach Tyrone Young, as this was the first win of his young coaching career. Also getting a big first was Gordon Anaple, who's wild first quarter touchdown reception proved to be the difference in the game, as well as being the first TD of his career. In addition to those two firsts, this win was the first for the Panthers against their old foes from the GLVC, as they were 0-8 all time against the Miners prior to tonight.

With the win Kentucky Wesleyan moves to 1-2 (0-2 G-MAC) on the season wihle Missouri S&T falls to 1-2 (0-2 GLVC).

The game started off with a bang for the Panthers, as Bryce Yeast intercepted Miner's quarterback Max Conard on the second play of the game. His 38 yard return put Wesleyan at the S&T 29. After a few short plays, Gordon Anaple dove in the back of the end zone to catch a tipped pass from Christian Arrambide and make it 6-0 after just a few minutes of play. Neither team could get much going offensively after the opening Panther drive. Missouri S&T's best chance came with two minutes left in the first quarter, but staring at a 4th and 2 on the KWC 22, Jalen Humphrey and James Noble stopped Miner running back Cameron Smith one yard short of the first down marker, putting any momentum they had to a screeching halt.

Up 6-0 after one half of play, the Panthers worked the clock in the third quarter. They held possession for all but 1:48 of play in the frame, giving S&T little chance to gain any traction. Thanks to a Cole Cawthorne 37 yard field goal, KWC went into the final 15 minutes with a 9-0 lead. The Wesleyan defense stepped up again in the fourth quarter, as a Zereoue Johnson and Jaden Santos-Lopez sack led to a safety for Wesleyan, giving them an 11-0 advantage with 10:53 to go in the game. After a Missouri S&T punt return for a touchdown made it 11-6 late, the Wesleyan defense stepped up big. With S&T driving down the field and looking to possibly score, Wesleyan forced three straight incomplete passes to end the game and take the five point win.

Christian Arrambide went 20-for-32 for 194 yards and a touchdown. Landon Newman rushed for 30 yards on an average of 5.0 yards/carry, and Peyton Peters led the receivers with four catches for 62 yards. In a balanced defensive effort, Jalen Humphrey and Damario Foster led the way with seven tackles apiece. Jaden Santos-Lopez, Zereoue Johnson and KJ Ray each recorded a sack on the night, with Santos-Lopez recording two TFL for nine total yards.

Wesleyan continues their quest to conquer GLVC opponents next week when they head to Libery, Mo. to take on William Jewell College, who were defeated 31-21 by Ohio Dominican this week. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. CT.
