Panthers Suffer First G-MAC Loss at No. 22 Walsh

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Kentucky Wesleyan College men's soccer team suffered its first Great Midwest Conference loss of the season on Thursday evening. Walsh University took advantage of two early scores, finishing with a 4-0 shutout of the Panthers.

The No. 22 ranked Cavaliers (6-0-1, 3-0 GMAC) scored in the eighth minute of the match on a goal by Gabriel Altawil. They added another goal in the 20th minute. The Panthers (3-2-1, 0-1-1 GMAC) took three shots in the opening 45 minutes of play, one being on goal. Walsh took a 2-0 lead into intermission.

The Panthers opened the second half with some urgency as they attempted to better the Walsh defense by passing over the top and into the scoring area. However, the Cavs were able to recover each time.

Calum Newson got through the Cavalier defense in the 61st minute, but his shot sailed high and directly over the Walsh net. In the 67th minute, Walsh added another goal to build a 3-0 lead. A minute later, Newson got free again, but Cavs' keeper Charlie Walker saved the attempt to the keep the shutout intact.

Walker also saved Max Wawrin's shot attempt in the 81st minute. The Panthers finished the match with six shots, three on goal. Hannes Nilsson got the start in between the pipes for the Panthers and made one save.

Wesleyan will stay in Canton for another match on Saturday afternoon, this time against Malone University. The contest is scheduled to start at 3 PM CT.
