Battaile's career high pushes Panthers past Dragons

OWENSBORO, KY - Prior to tonight, KWC couldn't get over the overtime hump this season, going 0-4 in extra period games this year. Wyatt Battaile wasn't about to let the Panthers go 0-5, as he hit some big shots late and scored a career high 30 points to lead Wesleyan to an 82-79 (ot) win over the Tiffin Dragons.

With the win, Wesleyan moves to 12-13 (7-10 G-MAC), while the Dragons fall to 9-14 (4-11 G-MAC).

Wyatt Battaile opened the game on fire, scoring 13 of Wesleyan's first 17 points as KWC led 17-13 eight minutes into the game. The Panthers looked as though they were going to pull away when Antonio Thomas hit a three to make it 29-19 with 7:15 left in the opening half. TU quickly responded, using an 8-0 run to cut it to two just over two minutes later. Jordan Roland hit a jumper to stop the bleeding and the Panthers finished the half strong, leading 39-33 at the break.

KWC scored six straight points to open the second half and led by 13 just a minute and a half into the frame. Tiffin quickly took the air out of the Panther crowd, going on a 22-7 run over the next eight minutes to take a 58-53 lead with 9:25 left. After buckets from Thomas and Battaile, JoMel Boyd gave Wesleyan back the lead with a three at the 5:57 mark of the second half. The teams went back and forth over the final six minutes of play, and with just six seconds left in the game, Battaile put in a free throw to tie the game and send the two teams to overtime.

Thomas made an and-1 layup on the Panther's second possession of overtime, then Sasha Sukhanov swished a huge jumper from the baseline to give KWC a three-point lead halfway through the overtime period. Battaile hit yet another jumper a minute later, and Wesleyan used free throws from Battaile and Jamil Wilson to close out the game and take down the Dragons.

Wyatt Battaile went 10-17 from the field and hit four threes for a career high 30 points. Antonio Thomas poured in 17 while Jordan Roland added 13. Battaile added eight rebounds while Thomas tallied eight assists.

KWC got great contributions from their bench, outscoring Tiffin 16-2 in that category.

KWC shot 28-61 (45.9%) from the field and a very solid 10-19 (52.6%) from three. Tiffin shot 31-67 (46.3%) from the field and 8-27 (29.6%) from behind the arc. Wesleyan hit 16 free throws to Tiffin's nine.

Wesleyan will look to continue their positive momentum as they host Ashland on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 2:15 p.m.
