Overtime curse strikes again

OWENSBORO, KY - After winning their first overtime game in five tries on Thursday, the Ashland Eagles came in to the Sportscenter on Saturday and handed Kentucky Wesleyan their fifth overtime loss this season. KWC got 41 combined points from Jordan Roland and Wyatt Battaile but it wasn't enough as they fell 75-71.

With the win Ashland moves to 16-7 (12-4) while KWC falls to 12-14 (7-11).

Down by seven early and in danger of letting things slip away, Jordan Roland and Jamil Wilson hit back-to-back threes to give Wesleyan a 19-18 lead with 7:29 left in the opening half. Each team then went on back-to-back six point runs before Ashland hit a three at the end of the half to take a 28-25 lead heading into halftime.

The second half started off with each team going on a run early on. The Eagles starting off the period hot and went up eight, then Wesleyan used three straight threes from Roland, Wyatt Battaile, and Nathan Boyle to quickly grab a 39-36 advantage. Ashland tried to pull away late, going up by eight with 4:29 left in the game, but Kentucky Wesleyan held the Eagles scoreless for the rest of regulation and came back to tie it at 62 to send things to overtime.

Antonio Thomas scored the first four points of overtime to give the Panthers an early lead, but Ashland came back and outscored KWC 13-5 the rest of the way to take it by a four point margin.

Jordan Roland led KWC with 22 points, while Wyatt Battail added 19 and Jamil Wilson tallied 11. JoMel Boyd hauled in a team high nine boards while four players passed out three assists.

Kentucky Wesleyan shot 24-64 (37.5%) from the field and 9-26 (34.6%) from behind the arc. Ashland shot 30-62 (48.4%) from the field and 7-21 (33.3%) from three. Despite the loss, KWC shot well from the charity stripe, going 14-16 from the line.

The Panthers will be back in action next week when they host Trevecca Nazarene at the Sportscenter on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
